Students’ Attitudes towards the Use of Extensive Listening for Vocabulary Development Case study: Second year Students at Chadli Bendjedid University (El Tarf )

Abstract

The present work aims at exploring students’ attitudes towards the use of extensive listening as a strategy that enhances the development of vocabulary. Vocabulary, which correlates with language production and comprehension, may be improved if students of English as a foreign language (EFL) listen extensively. Therefore, this study is based on the hypothesis that students hold positive attitudes towards the use of this strategy. To verify the plausibility of this hypothesis, a questionnaire is addressed to 20 second year EFL students at Chadli Bendjedid University. The analysis of the data reveals that the participants hold positive attitudes towards the use of extensive listening which may indicate that they are fully aware about its significance in vocabulary building and overall language development.

يهدف هذا العمل إلى استكشاف مواقف الطلاب تجاه استخدام الاستماع المُكثّف كاستراتيجية تُعزز تطوير المفردات. يُمكن تحسين المفردات، التي ترتبط بإنتاج اللغة وفهمها، إذا استمع طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية (EFL) بإنصات مُكثّف. لذلك، تستند هذه الدراسة إلى فرضية مفادها أن الطلاب لديهم مواقف إيجابية تجاه استخدام هذه الاستراتيجية. وللتحقق من صحة هذه الفرضية، وُجّه استبيان إلى 20 طالبًا من طلاب السنة الثانية في برنامج اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية بجامعة الشاذلي بن جديد. يُظهر تحليل البيانات أن المشاركين لديهم مواقف إيجابية تجاه استخدام الاستماع المُكثّف، مما قد يُشير إلى إدراكهم التام لأهميته في بناء المفردات وتطوير اللغة بشكل عام.
