Abstract
ABSTRACT Aquatic macroinvertebrates are widely recognized as effective bioindicators for assessing the ecological quality of freshwater ecosystems. The present study was conducted in Lake Tonga and Oued Messida, two wetlands located within El Kala National Park, with the aim of characterizing benthic macroinvertebrate communities and evaluating the ecological status of these aquatic environments. Sampling was carried out during the spring of 2026 at six stations distributed between the two study sites. The collected organisms were identified in the laboratory and analyzed using several ecological and biological indices. The results revealed a total richness of 37 taxa in Oued Messida and 38 taxa in Lake Tonga, representing 2,610 and 2,329 individuals, respectively. The families Corixidae, Dytiscidae, Hydrochidae, and Pleidae were the most abundant in both ecosystems. Shannon diversity indices reached 2.816 in Oued Messida and 2.775 in Lake Tonga, indicating relatively high diversity. Pielou’s evenness values (0.778 and 0.761) reflected a balanced distribution of individuals among taxa. Margalef richness indices were 4.576 and 4.772, respectively, highlighting high taxonomic richness. Similarity analyses showed a strong resemblance between the benthic communities of the two sites, with most taxa occurring in both ecosystems. The Family Biotic Index (FBI) values of 4.26 for Oued Messida and 4.56 for Lake Tonga classified both sites as having good biological water quality and low organic pollution. This study highlights the relatively rich benthic biodiversity of the investigated wetlands and confirms the usefulness of macroinvertebrates as reliable tools for ecological assessment and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems.
