Investigating the Role of Lyrics in Developing the Listening comprehension among EFL learners

Abstract

In foreign language learning, listening comprehension is an essential skill that enables learners to effectively understand and interpret spoken language. This descriptive study investigates the role of song lyrics in enhancing listening comprehension among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Specifically, it explores both EFL teachers' and students' perceptions of the relationship between song lyrics and listening comprehension development, examines how song lyrics support the improvement of listening comprehension skills, and identifies the challenges associated with their use as learning resources. The study was conducted at Chadli Bendjedid University and involved 11 EFL teachers and 32 EFL students. Data were collected through two questionnaires designed for both teachers and students. To test the hypotheses and achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers adopted a mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis procedures. The findings revealed that both teachers and students held positive perceptions toward the integration of song lyrics into English language learning. Most participants reported that songs contributed to the enhancement of listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation accuracy, and awareness of different English accents. Furthermore, students frequently used English songs as authentic listening materials and perceived them as both effective and engaging learning resources. However, several challenges were identified, including unfamiliar vocabulary, rapid speech delivery, slang expressions, and regional accent variations. The study concludes that song lyrics constitute valuable pedagogical resources for improving listening comprehension among EFL learners. The findings provide practical insights for EFL teachers and contribute to the growing body of research on the use of authentic materials in language learning. In addition, the study offers pedagogical implications and recommendations for the effective integration of song lyrics into English language instruction to enhance learners' listening comprehension skills.

في تعلم اللغات الأجنبية، يُعدّ فهم الاستماع مهارة أساسية تمكّن المتعلمين من فهم اللغة المنطوقة وتفسيرها بفعالية. تبحث هذه الدراسة الوصفية دور كلمات الأغاني في تعزيز فهم الاستماع لدى متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. وتحديدًا، تستكشف الدراسة تصورات كل من معلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية وطلابها حول العلاقة بين كلمات الأغاني وتنمية فهم الاستماع، وتدرس كيف تدعم كلمات الأغاني تحسين مهارات فهم الاستماع، وتحدد التحديات المرتبطة باستخدامها كموارد تعليمية. أُجريت الدراسة في جامعة الشادلي بن جديد، وشارك فيها 11 معلمًا و32 طالبًا في تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. جُمعت البيانات من خلال استبيانين مُصممين خصيصًا لكل من المعلمين والطلاب. ولاختبار الفرضيات وتحقيق أهداف الدراسة، اعتمد الباحثون منهجًا مختلطًا يجمع بين أساليب جمع البيانات وتحليلها الكمية والنوعية. وكشفت النتائج أن لدى كل من المعلمين والطلاب تصورات إيجابية تجاه دمج كلمات الأغاني في تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية. أفاد معظم المشاركين بأن الأغاني ساهمت في تحسين مهارات الاستماع، واكتساب المفردات، ودقة النطق، والوعي باللهجات الإنجليزية المختلفة. علاوة على ذلك، استخدم الطلاب الأغاني الإنجليزية بشكل متكرر كمواد استماع أصلية، واعتبروها موارد تعليمية فعّالة وجذابة. مع ذلك، تم تحديد عدة تحديات، منها المفردات غير المألوفة، وسرعة الكلام، والتعبيرات العامية، واختلافات اللهجات الإقليمية. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن كلمات الأغاني تُشكل موارد تربوية قيّمة لتحسين مهارات الاستماع لدى متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. تُقدم النتائج رؤى عملية لمعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية، وتُساهم في إثراء البحث المتنامي حول استخدام المواد الأصلية في تعلم اللغة. إضافة إلى ذلك، تُقدم الدراسة توصيات وإرشادات تربوية لدمج كلمات الأغاني بفعالية في تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية لتعزيز مهارات الاستماع لدى المتعلمين.
