Abstract

SUMMARY Between May and July 2022, a study was carried out at Lake Tonga, a Ramsar site of international importance (north-east Algeria), on the breeding ecology of the Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida. This work was based on the study of the breeding biology of this species, notably: the characteristics of nests and eggs, laying dates and periods, laying size, hatchlings and breeding success. Field investigations led to the discovery of 27 nests located in islands of White Water lily Numphaea alba. Some of the nests were located on water and were built with Sparganium erectum and brown algae. Their external and internal diameters varied between 28 and 35.5 cm and between 12 and 15 cm, respectively. Eggs were measured at lengths of between 3.2 and 3.7 cm and widths of between 2.3 and 2.7 cm. The highest number of clutches was recorded in June. Clutch size varied between 1 and 3 eggs (N= 49 eggs). The clutches that survived to hatching had a success rate of 77.5%. Nests with at least one hatched chick represented more than 74% of the nests found. This study provided interesting and original data on a poorly documented species that breeds exclusively in Lake Tonga, the only nesting site for the species in North Africa.
