Investigating the Influence of French (L2) On English (L3) Lexis Development Case Study: 4th year MiddleSchool at Boukhatala Said – Skikda -

Abstract

Teaching English vocabulary is an important aspect to acquire language effectively. The aim of this study is to scrutinize the influence of the previously learned French language (L2) on English (L3) vocabulary development. The study was carried out in Boukhatala Said Middle School in Skikda in the academic year of 2017/2018. In order to confirm or reject the put forward hypotheses, two data gathering tools were used: classroom observation and questionnaire. The classroom observation was carried out with two groups of fourth year English as foreign language (EFL) pupils at Boukhatala Said Middle School, and the questionnaire was administered to 10 EFL teachers from different Middle Schools in the same constituency to get more insights about the subject matter under investigation. The results revealed that to some extent French language interference in acquiring English L3 vocabulary could have a positive impact in developing a good linguistic repertoire.

تدريس مفردات اللغة الإنجليزية هو جانب مهم لاكتساب اللغة بشكل فعال. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى فحص تأثير اللغة الفرنسية التي تم تعلمها سابقًا (L2) على تطوير مفردات اللغة الإنجليزية (L3). أجريت الدراسة في مدرسة بوكهتالة سعيد المتوسطة في سكيكدة خلال العام الدراسي 2017/2018. من أجل تأكيد أو رفض الفرضيات المقترحة، تم استخدام أداتين لجمع البيانات: ملاحظة الصف واستبيان. تم إجراء مراقبة الصف مع مجموعتين من تلاميذ الصف الرابع الذين يدرسون اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية (EFL) في مدرسة بوكهتالة سعيد المتوسطة، وتم توزيع الاستبيان على 10 معلمين للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية من مدارس متوسطة مختلفة في نفس المديرية للحصول على رؤى أكثر حول الموضوع قيد البحث. كشفت النتائج أن تدخل اللغة الفرنسية إلى حد ما في اكتساب مفردات اللغة الإنجليزية L3 يمكن أن يكون له تأثير إيجابي في تطوير مخزون لغوي جيد.
