Abstract
Abstract The phytochemicals found in mustard seeds reduce oxidative stress and stimulate the activity of antioxidant enzymes involved in detoxification processes. In this context, the objective of our study is to investigate the antioxidant potential of wild mustard pollen (Sinapis arvensis L.) in Wistar rats subjected to oxidative stress induced by ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME). Male rats were divided into four equal groups and treated by oral gavage for four weeks as follows : a control group (T), a positive control group (P ; 300 mg/kg body weight (bw) of aqueous extract of wild mustard pollen grains), an EGME-treated group (EGME ; 500 mg/kg bw of EGME), and a combined treatment group (P + EGME). The obtained results showed that exposure to EGME induced a significant decrease in GSH levels and GPx enzymatic antioxidant activity, accompanied by an increase in MDA levels in the investigated organs (testes and liver). In contrast, co-treatment with EGME and the aqueous extract of wild mustard pollen (P + EGME) revealed an adjustment of these alterations, as evidenced by a reduction in the lipid peroxidation marker (MDA) and an increase in GSH levels and GPx activity. In conclusion, administration of EGME induced oxidative stress in Wistar rats, whereas the combination of this solvent with the aqueous extract of wild mustard pollen (Sinapis arvensis L.) attenuated this toxicity thanks to its antioxidant property.
