AI Conversation Partners: Exploring the Significance of ChatGPT Voice Interaction on Enhancing EFL Learners’ Speaking Fluency

Abstract

The educational landscape has witnessed great changes due to the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). With the emergence of AI chatbots that serve as powerful conversational partners, which support autonomous learning, Algerian EFL students still struggle in developing their oral fluency due to limited opportunities to practice speaking. This study aimed to explore EFL learners’ perceptions and attitudes towards using ChatGPT voice as a conversational partner in enhancing their speaking fluency. This study adopted a descriptive mixed-method design, using an online questionnaire to collect data, which was administered to 53 Master 1 students from the English department of Chadli Bendjedid University. The findings revealed that participants generally hold highly positive attitudes towards using ChatGPT voice, as it improved their speaking fluency and provided a safe environment to practice English speaking. However, despite its benefits, learners encountered some technical and practical challenges. This study concluded with practical recommendations for using ChatGPT voice in pedagogical contexts, developing a new model for AI developers, and for future research. Ultimately, the results showed that the integration of ChatGPT voice was highly recommended in EFL classrooms.

شهد الواقع التعليمي تحولات جذرية بفضل دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي. ومع ظهور روبوتات الدردشة المدعومين بالذكاء الاصطناعي الذين يعدون شركاء محادثة فعّالين يدعمون التعلّم الذاتي، لا يزال طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية في الجزائر يواجهون صعوبة في تطوير طلاقتهم الشفوية نظرًا لمحدودية فرص ممارسة التحدث. هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف تصورات ومواقف طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية تجاه استخدام تقنية ChatGPT الصوتية كشريك محادثة لتحسين طلاقتهم في التحدث. اعتمدت الدراسة منهجية وصفية مختلطة، حيث تم جمع البيانات من خلال استبيان إلكتروني وُزّع على 53 طالبًا من طلاب السنة الأولى ماستر في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة الشاذلي بن جديد. كشفت النتائج أن المشاركين عمومًا لديهم مواقف إيجابية للغاية تجاه استخدام تقنية ChatGPT الصوتية، إذ حسنت طلاقتهم في التحدث، ووفرت بيئة آمنة لممارسة التحدث باللغة الإنجليزية. مع ذلك، ظهرت بعض التحديات التقنية والعملية. اختتمت الدراسة بتوصيات عملية لاستخدام التقنية ChatGPT الصوتية في السياقات التربوية، وتطوير نموذج جديد لمطوري الذكاء الاصطناعي، وتوجيه البحوث المستقبلية. في الختام، أظهرت النتائج أن دمج تقنية ChatGPT الصوتية يُوصى به بشدة في فصول اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية.
