Exploring The Role of Communicative Activities in Enhancing EFL Learners’ Grammatical Accuracy & Fluency in Oral Production

Abstract

The role of communicative activities in enhancing oral proficiency is a central issue in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. These activities are widely recognized as effective pedagogical tools that influence both grammatical accuracy and fluency. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the extent to which communicative tasks contribute to improving learners’ oral production and to explore their perceptions of such activities. To achieve these aims, two groups were selected from Chadli Bendjdid-Taref University: 32 first-year LMD students and 13 EFL teachers. The study adopted a quantitative survey approach, using structured questionnaires to capture both learner and teacher perspectives. The investigation examined the impact of interactive tasks such as debates, role plays, and oral presentations on learners’ confidence, fluency, and grammatical accuracy. The findings reveal that communicative activities significantly enhance confidence and fluency, with most students reporting smoother speech and reduced reliance on mental translation. However, sustaining grammatical accuracy proved more challenging, as learners often struggled to recall rules under time pressure. Teachers emphasized the importance of structured feedback and formal tasks to support accuracy, while students highlighted the motivational benefits of interactive practice. Overall, results confirm that communicative activities are highly effective for oral proficiency development, though a balanced approach is required to integrate fluency gains with grammatical precision. Keywords: Communicative activities, oral proficiency, grammatical accuracy, fluency, EFL learning ملخص يعد دور الأنشطة التواصلية في تعزيز الكفاءة الشفوية قضية مركزية في تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية؛ إذ يُعترف بهذه الأنشطة على نطاق واسع كأدوات بيداغوجية فعالة تؤثر في كل من الدقة النحوية والطلاقة اللغوية. وبناءً على ذلك، تهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى تقصي مدى مساهمة المهام التواصلية في تحسين الإنتاج الشفوي لدى المتعلمين، واستكشاف تصوراتهم حول هذه الأنشطة. ولتحقيق هذه الأهداف، تم اختيار مجموعتين من جامعة الشاذلي بن جديد الطارف تمثلتا في و 32 طالبا ( نظام ل م د ) 13 أستاذا للغة الإنجليزية كلغة اجنبية. اعتمدت الدراسة على المنهج المسحي الكمي، باستخدام استبيانات مغلقة لرصد وجهات نظر كل من المتعلمين والأساتذة. وبحثت الدراسة في أثر المهام التفاعلية —مثل المناظرات، لعب الأدوار، والعروض الشفوية— على ثقة المتعلمين، طلاقتهم، ودقتهم النحوية.أظهرت النتائج أن الأنشطة التواصلية تعزز الثقة والطلاقة بشكل ملحوظ، حيث أشار معظم الطلبة إلى تحدثهم بلغة أكثر انسيابية وتراجع اعتمادهم على الترجمة الذهنية. ومع ذلك، تبين أن الحفاظ على الدقة النحوية يشكل تحديًا أكبر، نظراً لصعوبة استرجاع المتعلمين للقواعد تحت ضغط الوقت. وفي هذا الصدد، شدد الأساتذة على أهمية التقييم البنائي (الملاحظات التوجيهية) والمهام الرسمية لدعم الدقة النحوية، بينما سلط الطلبة الضوء على الفوائد التحفيزية للممارسة التفاعلية. وعمومًا، تؤكد النتائج أن الأنشطة التواصلية ذات فعالية عالية في تطوير الكفاءة الشفوية، رغْمَ أن الأمر يتطلب نهجًا متوازنًا يدمج بين مكاسب الطلاقة والضبط النحوي. الكلمات المفتاحية: الأنشطة التواصلية، الكفاءة الشفوية، الدقة النحوية، الطلاقة، تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية.
