Abstract The Role of Educational Communication in Specialized Centers for the Care of Children with Intellectual Disabilities: A Field Study at the Psycho-Pedagogical Center of El Tarf This study lies at the intersection of the sociology of communication and special education. It investigates the role of educational communication in specialized centers that provide care for children with intellectual disabilities, with particular reference to the Psycho-Pedagogical Center for Children with Intellectual Disabilities in El Tarf, Algeria. The study addresses two subsidiary questions: how does educational communication contribute to the care provided to children with intellectual disabilities within the institution, and how does social counseling enhance the quality of that care? A descriptive research design was adopted, using a questionnaire and field observation as the primary data collection methods. These instruments were administered to a purposive sample of 29 professional staff members, including educators, teachers, psychologists, and social workers, who work directly with children with intellectual disabilities at the center. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter establishes the conceptual framework by presenting the research problem, objectives, key concepts, previous studies, and theoretical foundations. The second chapter examines educational communication, including its components, tools, objectives, and challenges, while also discussing specialized centers, different types of intellectual disability, and care mechanisms. The third chapter outlines the methodological framework, including the study setting, research tools, and sampling procedures. The fourth and final chapter presents the empirical findings through statistical analysis of the questionnaire data, including cross-tabulation analysis. The findings indicate that more than 89% of the respondents rely on educational communication in their daily professional practice, while 93.1% confirmed its positive impact on children's daily interactions and its contribution to reducing challenging behaviors. The most frequently used communication tools were play-based activities (93.1%), physical activities (86.2%), and visual aids (75.9%), which is consistent with contemporary sensory-based approaches in special education. Furthermore, 86.2% of the respondents acknowledged the effectiveness of social counseling in improving the quality of care. Although multidisciplinary collaboration received broad support among respondents (93.1%), its practical implementation remains limited, as only 55.2% reported consistent behavioral improvement following counseling interventions. The study concludes that educational communication constitutes a fundamental pillar in the care of children with intellectual disabilities. However, its effectiveness depends on continuous professional training, the availability of adequate educational resources, effective interdisciplinary collaboration, and the meaningful involvement of families as active educational partners rather than passive recipients of services. Keywords: Educational communication; children with intellectual disabilities; special education; specialized centers; social counseling; multidisciplinary collaboration.
