Abstract
This study aims to shed light on the structure of the banking system
in Algeria by analyzing its current components, identifying the challenges
it faces, and exploring the prospects for its development in light of rapid
economic and technological transformations. The banking system plays a
central role in supporting the national economy through its functions in
mobilizing financial resources, financing projects, facilitating economic
transactions, as well as promoting financial stability and achieving
sustainable development.
The study's findings reveal that the Algerian banking system still
faces several challenges, including limited diversity in banking products
and services, weak innovation and digitalization, slow pace of regulatory
reforms, and the dominance of public banks in the financial market, which
restricts competition and limits performance efficiency. The study also
highlights the need to enhance transparency and governance and to update
the legal and regulatory framework in line with international standards.
In light of these findings, the study recommends adopting
comprehensive structural reforms aimed at developing banking
IV
infrastructure, encouraging financial innovation and digitalization,
supporting the independence of the central bank, and promoting
investment in the private banking sector. These measures would contribute
to building a modern, flexible, and inclusive banking system capable of
meeting future economic challenges.
