Taraxacum officinale is a medicinal plant that has been widely used for centuries and is known for its richness in bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. These compounds play a major role in protecting against oxidative stress, making this plant of considerable pharmacological and nutraceutical interest.
The aim of this study was to investigate the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of Taraxacum officinale by comparing aqueous extracts of its leaves and flowers obtained by infusion. Colorimetric assays were performed to determine the levels of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and condensed tannins, while antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro using the DPPH radical scavenging assay.
The results showed that the aqueous leaf extract was significantly richer in total phenolic compounds, whereas the flowers contained higher levels of flavonoids and condensed tannins. Despite this difference, the floral extract exhibited greater antioxidant activity, characterized by a lower IC₅₀ value. Statistical analysis revealed a strong correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (r = 0.88), confirming the key role of these compounds in free-radical scavenging. Flavonoids showed a moderate contribution (r = 0.47), whereas condensed tannins exhibited a weaker correlation (r = 0.20), which may be attributed to their limited bioavailability.
In conclusion, this study confirms that total phenolics are the main determinants of the antioxidant activity of Taraxacum officinale. The leaves appear to be a promising source for pharmacological valorization owing to their high polyphenol content, while the flowers, despite their lower overall content, demonstrated superior radical-scavenging efficiency related to the qualitative nature of their flavonoids. These findings highlight the potential of this plant as a natural source of antioxidants for the prevention of oxidative stress and related diseases.

I
