The Impact of Coronavirus Pandemic on E-Learning Case Study: Third Year EFL Students at Chadli Bendjedid University

Abstract

The coronavirus epidemic undoubtedly posed significant socioeconomic challenges around the world, and many governments have undertaken restrictive actions to prevent social gatherings and foster social separation in an attempt to regulate the spread. These restrictions entail the closure of higher education institutions and a significant transition from traditional classroom-based learning and teaching toward e-learning. The current study attempts to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on e- learning, the difficulties encountered in it, and whether this change really affects students’ perception and motivation. In order to achieve the research objectives and obtain the desired results, a descriptive approach is followed, adopting both qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. Therefore, two questionnaires for both students and teachers are conducted as research tools. The participants are seven teachers and 30 third-year students from the department of English at Chadli Bendjedid University (CBU), who are accustomed to the use of e- learning during the lockdown. The results revealed that COVID-19 disease led to a huge increase in the use of e-learning and helped facilitate the learning process during the lockdown. Furthermore, it is also revealed that this transformation brought many challenges, especially for students, affecting their perception and motivation.

لا شك أن وباء فيروس كورونا قد فرض تحديات اجتماعية واقتصادية كبيرة حول العالم، وقد اتخذت العديد من الحكومات إجراءات تقييدية لمنع التجمعات الاجتماعية وتعزيز التباعد الاجتماعي في محاولة للسيطرة على انتشاره. وقد استلزمت هذه القيود إغلاق مؤسسات التعليم العالي، وانتقالًا ملحوظًا من التعلم والتعليم التقليدي القائم على الفصول الدراسية إلى التعلم الإلكتروني. وتسعى الدراسة الحالية إلى دراسة تأثير جائحة كوفيد-19 على التعلم الإلكتروني، والصعوبات التي واجهته، وما إذا كان هذا التغيير يؤثر حقًا على إدراك الطلاب ودوافعهم. ولتحقيق أهداف البحث والحصول على النتائج المرجوة، تم اتباع نهج وصفي، معتمدًا على المنهجين النوعي والكمي لجمع البيانات وتحليلها. ولذلك، تم إعداد استبيانين لكل من الطلاب والمعلمين كأدوات بحث. المشاركون هم سبعة أساتذة و30 طالبًا من السنة الثالثة من قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة الشاذلي بن جديد (CBU)، ممن اعتادوا على استخدام التعلم الإلكتروني خلال فترة الإغلاق. كشفت النتائج أن جائحة كوفيد-19 أدت إلى زيادة هائلة في استخدام التعلم الإلكتروني، وساهمت في تسهيل عملية التعلم خلال فترة الإغلاق. علاوة على ذلك، كشفت الدراسة أيضًا أن هذا التحول جلب العديد من التحديات، وخاصةً للطلاب، مما أثر على إدراكهم وتحفيزهم.
