Abstract The present study, entitled “Study of the Specific Diversity and Spatial Distribution of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in two Aquatic Ecosystems”, was carried out in two wetlands of the El Kala region (Northeastern Algeria), namely Lake Tonga and Oued Messida. The main objective is to evaluate the diversity of these communities, analyze their spatial distribution, and assess the biological quality of these ecosystems using ecological and biotic indices. Sampling was conducted monthly from October 2025 to April 2026 at six sampling stations. During each survey, three samples were collected per station using a Haveneau net with a mesh size of 0.3 mm. The collected organisms were preserved in ethanol and subsequently identified in the laboratory. The results revealed a high taxonomic richness, with 23 families recorded in Oued Messida (680 individuals) and 22 families in Lake Tonga (662 individuals), mainly dominated by the families Corixidae and Lymnaeidae. Community structure indices showed slightly higher values in Oued Messida (Shannon diversity index: 2.62; Margalef richness index: 3.37; Evenness: 0.83) compared with Lake Tonga (Shannon diversity index: 2.53; Margalef richness index: 3.23; Evenness: 0.81). Similarity analyses based on the Jaccard and Bray–Curtis indices highlighted a strong resemblance between the two communities, with the absence of Nepidae in Lake Tonga representing the main difference. Biological assessment indicated good to very good water conditions according to the Family Biotic Index (FBI: 5.18 and 5.02) and the Biological Monitoring Working Party index (BMWP: 110 and 107), whereas the Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT: 4.78 and 4.86) reflected a moderate ecological quality. Overall, both ecosystems support a rich benthic biodiversity and relatively balanced communities, indicating a generally favorable ecological status. These findings confirm the value of benthic macroinvertebrates as reliable bioindicators for the monitoring and management of wetlands Abstract The present study, entitled “Study of the Specific Diversity and Spatial Distribution of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in two Aquatic Ecosystems”, was carried out in two wetlands of the El Kala region (Northeastern Algeria), namely Lake Tonga and Oued Messida.
