Abstract
Abstract: This study sought to understand the impact of cognitive distraction resulting from the multiplicity of information sources on public awareness, represented by university surdents in Algerian universities, within the context of the transformations imposed by the digital environment, characterized by information abundance and a wide diversity of knowledge sources. The study was based on a central research question: What is the nature of the impact of cognitive distraction caused by multiple information sources on the level of university students’ awareness? To address this issue, a set of sub-questions was formulated, focusing on the relationship between the density and diversity of information sources and the Levels of cognitive distraction among students. The study also examined the connection between the multiplicity of digital platforms and modern media and students’ ability to process information and engage in critical understanding, as well as the role of this diversity in shaping their cognitive awareness through comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. The study adopted a general hypothesis stating that cognitive distraction resulting from multiple information sources affects public awareness, in addition to several sub-hypotheses suggesting a relationship between the density and diversity of information sources and levels of cognitive distraction. It also assumed a connection between the use of multiple digital media and students’ ability to process information, as well as the contribution of information diversity to the formation of their cognitive awareness. The findings revealed that university students operate within a rich and diverse information environment, which provides broader opportunities for Learning and knowledge acquisition. However, it may also lead to varying degrees of cognitive distraction due to information overload and the abundance of available choices. The study further showed that the impact of multiple information sources on cognitive awareness is neither direct nor constant ; rather, it depends on students’ ability to organize, analyze, and critically select information. Therefore, the multiplicity of information sources can positively contribute to the development of cognitive awareness when used consciously, but it may become a source of confusion when information management skills are lacking.
